Steven Suthiana is the Global Head of Digital Media and Operations at Mansueto Ventures, publisher of award-winning Inc. and Fast Company magazines and their associated websites, Inc.com, FastCompany.com and FastCoExist.com.

 

WHAT LED YOU TO START WORKING IN DIGITAL/MEDIA PUBLISHING?

I studied Biology and Psychology in college. I did research for a couple of months and realized that it wasn’t for me. Hence, I applied to many companies and it just happened that one of the companies that replied back to my application was a Trade Publication company. That’s how it all started for me.

 

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

It varies day to day given my responsibilities are cross multiple functions. That said, my day usually consists of problem-solving, selling, and planning. Lately, I have spent considerable time exploring various revenue streams for diversification, from International, In-Direct, to Partnerships that may bring in new revenue for us.

 

WHAT DOES YOUR WORK SETUP LOOK LIKE? (YOUR APPS, PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS, ETC.)

I use my calendar heavily, I try to keep my outlook neat and while I am unable to do a zero inbox, I keep it manageable. And for a digital guy, I rely on my notebook with to do lists.

 

WHAT DO YOU DO TO GET INSPIRED?

I have three personal passions: Travel, Ski, and Food. I feel those three can go hand-in-hand but I am most happy when exploring new places and trying new things. It is a source of my happiness and inspirations.

 

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OF WRITING OR QUOTE?

“Knowledge is power”

 

WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING/INNOVATIVE THING YOU HAVE SEEN ON ANOTHER OUTLET OTHER THAN YOUR OWN?

I think the way WSJ and NY Times executes their Native/Custom Content is amazing. For example: https://www.wsj.com/ad/cocainenomics from WSJ. I do enjoy the creativity there.

 

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM THAT YOU’RE PASSIONATELY TACKLING AT THE MOMENT?

As mentioned, diversification of revenue but they have many challenges as well. For example, in the realm of International Revenue, the biggest problem here is fragmentation.

 

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR AMBITIOUS DIGITAL PUBLISHING AND MEDIA PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT?

Everyone needs to start somewhere, do not get discouraged. Be a “sponge”, absorb all of the information, and do the extra mile.
